It is compulsory for all lawful residents in Singapore (other than certain exempted persons) to register for an NRIC either upon becoming a resident, or if below the age of 15, within one year of attaining that age.

Many businesses and other organisations require NRIC cards to be produced for verification and in some situations other forms of identification can be produced as well as simply providing the NRIC number.
