•Itemise your budget!
•Rather than asking for a general donation, give the foundation a specific sum you are requesting
•If it’s for a larger project such as a building, try to break the project into smaller chunks and ask the funder to find a specific part (like the disability access ramps, a learning centre, an auditorium, a counselling room, etc)
•Be realistic – don’t underestimate costs or ask for less than you need
•Get quotes – be specific and detailed
•Attach quotes in an appendix if necessary
•Especially important for regional areas where travel costs, consultants, materials costs may be higher
•Justify personnel, travel, equipment costs especially carefully
•Always list other funding sources approached.
•Include all sources approached for this project and amount requested from each
•Include expected time frame for hearing from other funding sources approached
•Not everyone will say yes – so cover all your bases!
•Remember that foundations love to co-fund – with one another, with government and with business
